The Vatican stated that the late Pope Francis’s remains would be moved to St. Peter’s Basilica today to lay in state until his burial on Saturday morning. According to the Holy See, the funeral Mass will be held in St. Peter’s Square at 10:00 a.m.
Following the liturgy, which will be led by Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Re will offer a closing prayer during which the Pope will be solemnly handed to God.
In accordance with his desires, Pope Francis will be buried in the crypt of St. Peter’s Basilica at Rome’s Basilica of St. Mary Major, making him the first pope to be buried outside of the Vatican in over a century.
In contrast to past popes who were interred in the customary three nested coffins composed of cypress, lead, and oak, he also asked for a straightforward wooden coffin.
