Mumbai Indians vs. Sunrisers Hyderabad: At the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday, the Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by a commanding 7-wicket margin thanks to “Vingate” Rohit Sharma’s aggressive, stroke-filled 70 and Suryakumar Yadav’s flamboyance.
The Mumbai Indians, who were sometimes criticised for being sluggish out of the gates in the IPL, stormed back into contention by winning four consecutive games and finding their rhythm just when the season needed it.
Despite losing Ryan Rickelton early in the powerplay, Rohit Sharma, who was getting better, took over and blasted the Mumbai Indians with a barrage of sixes and boundaries.
Will Jacks, who was promoted to bat at number three, was a fantastic compliment to the former captain as MI easily reached a dominant 56/1 before the field powerplay concluded.
The game was concluded with a powerful 53-run partnership between Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav, who provided the customary finishing touch.
Rohit was in form as he hammered 70 off 46 deliveries to quickly end the home team’s suffering in 15.4 overs while chasing a below-average 143 for 8.
When Rohit, the captain of India for both Test and One-Day International cricket, smashed an off-cutter from Pat Cummins over the deep square leg boundary for a six and then a four in the third over, he made his intentions clear.
Having entered the field as an impact substitute late in the second half, Rohit was able to quickly assess the conditions on this firm and level surface.
In the fourth over, Rohit was ready to jump on the ball as Jaydev Unadkat took the speed off it, lifting it forcefully over cover for his second six.
After going through a spell in which he didn’t seem to be out of form but was unable to score many runs, Rohit skilfully combined attack and defence for another excellent performance that ruined SRH’s chances.
Earlier, a listless SRH was saved from a disastrous start by Klaasen’s methodical 71 and Manohar’s 43, which led them to 143/8.
In his 44-ball 71, Klaasen hit nine fours and two sixes, adding 99 runs for the sixth wicket. Abhinav Manohar, an impact substitution, played a solid second fiddle with his 37-ball 43 (2x4s, 3x6s).
