School Holidays Update: Amid the rising temperatures across North India, a major update has been issued regarding summer vacations for school children. Like last year, Punjab is expected to announce summer holidays in May, as the scorching heat continues to intensify.
With heatwaves gripping the region, the Punjab government is likely to declare summer vacations shortly. Both parents and students are eagerly waiting for the official announcement. For reference, last year, all government, aided, and private schools in Punjab had summer vacations from 21 May to 30 June.
Given the severe heat in North India, the Delhi government has already announced summer holidays. Schools in Delhi will remain closed from 11 May 2025 to 30 June 2025, ensuring the safety of students during the peak heat season.
Meanwhile, in Chandigarh, with temperatures soaring, the Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CCPCR) has issued important guidelines for pre-primary and primary schools.
Time for outdoor activities must be scheduled during cooler parts of the day to protect young children from the direct sun.
Avoid exposing children to harsh sunlight, especially during peak afternoon hours.
Immediate medical attention must be provided if any child shows symptoms of heat-related illnesses.
Commission Chairperson Shipra Bansal emphasized that the advisory comes after receiving complaints about some schools exposing young children to harsh weather during playtime. She urged schools to prioritize children's health by modifying outdoor schedules.
The commission has also requested parents and guardians to take extra care while dropping off and picking up children from school during this extremely hot weather. Proper hydration, lightweight clothing, and avoiding direct sunlight exposure have been advised to ensure the children's well-being.
With summer vacations being rolled out across Punjab, Delhi, and Chandigarh, children, parents, and teachers alike can expect a much-needed break. Official announcements from other states are also expected soon, depending on local weather conditions.
