In addition to discussing her potential return to the United States, actress Karla Sofia Gascon voiced her fear about the trans community “losing their freedom” globally.
The Hollywood Reporter claims that she also discussed her movie “Emilia Perez.”
The first trans woman to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress, Gascon, has previously received criticism for resurfacing racist and anti-Islamic comments. She subsequently apologized for her prior behavior and reaffirmed her dedication to self-improvement.
After writer Sarah Hagi discovered her dubious tweets from 2016, Gascon’s hopes of being the first openly transgender actress to win an Academy Award were scuppered.
Widespread indignation and a reaction against Gascon resulted from the postings, which included disparaging remarks against Islam, George Floyd, and the LGBTQ+ community.
“I’m looking forward to it,” she stated in Spanish when discussing the prospect of going back to the United States. I want to know whether everything will be well when I get to the United States.
“I hope so, but if they don’t let me in or they don’t let me work because they consider that I am not a sufficiently qualified person or they want to discriminate against me because of my sexuality, then it will be very difficult,” she added, referring to President Trump’s executive orders that targeted transgender, nonbinary, and intersex individuals, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
However, I hope so. I’m excited to accomplish a lot of things in the United States because I believe it’s a great nation that has everything we’ve ever wanted in this world, including freedom, which we are losing. According to the site, she said, “We are losing it.”
“Well, it has changed radically because it was a film that, for me, is already part of the history of cinema and that is going to be a cult film,” she said when discussing how “Emilia Perez” has impacted her life.
That obviously has an inherent obligation, particularly in light of the events surrounding the movie and transgender individuals.
“I think the moment takes on greater relevance,” she said, “and we are in a very complicated and difficult time in which I sincerely feel like one of the first victims of all this hate.”
In the Italian movie The Life Lift, she will portray a psychotherapist who represents “the devil and god.” She also spoke about her future plans. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she has a French film about a blues musician trying to adopt a daughter from a refugee camp, one in Spain, and another in Argentina.
