A driver has been arrested after four pedestrians were injured in two separate collisions in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, on Saturday.

A 49-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and attempted murder and is being detained in a hospital.

Police said the incident is not being treated as terror-related.

One woman was airlifted to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries after being struck on Whitworth Road.

Three people, including a child, suffered minor injuries on Woodgate Avenue and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Emergency services were called to both roads, which are about two miles apart, at around 2.30pm on Saturday afternoon.

Assistant Chief Constable John Webster of Greater Manchester Police said: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred in Rochdale today. Our officers are supporting the victims and their families at this time.

"We believe this to be an isolated incident with one lone offender arrested and in hospital. We are working tirelessly to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of our community."

He encouraged the public to come forward with any concerns or any information that could assist the investigation.

The Assistant Chief Constable confirmed that additional resources will remain in the area.

The roads remain closed as the police continue their enquiries.
