flights have been delayed after their IT system reported "issues" around 6am this morning (May 11). Check-in, baggage and security were all affected by the technical problem. Pictures from the airport show long queues forming in the airport, with many sharing that their flights have left without them.

The airport's official account shared an updated message on X at 8am saying: "Our teams are working hard to fully restore operations following the IT issue that impacted our systems earlier this morning. "While the issue has been resolved, some may still be subject to delays. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause and advise passengers to check the status of their flights with their airlines before travelling to the airport. "We hope to have all systems fully resolved soon and will provide another update shortly."

No cause of the IT system issue has been revealed at this time. However, expectant holidaymakers at the airport have described scenes at security of "hell".

"The airport is chaos, staff don't know what to do," one passenger replied. "People are sending passengers to the wrong drop off, tensions are high as they struggle to find order.

"Most flights are struggling to get their bags loaded into the planes due to 2 belts being operational."

Some airlines, including , have told passengers to go home, and passengers are asking the airport who will pay their compensation.

The Express spoke to Molly, who was due to fly to Ibiza with Jet2 at 7.45 this morning, but is still at the airport as of 10am.

"All we knew when we got to the airport at around 5:45 was the IT was down. There [were] lines out the door just to get into the terminal itself," Molly said. "After getting in there was no one there organising where people had to go. People were all just stood in mass shuffling. People were pushing and shoving to get in front.

"When we finally made it to the check in the escalator for the bags was also broken so we then had to after waiting an hour and 45 minutes we had to go to another line to drop it off."

"Many people ended up having to leave after hours of waiting as their flights had been and gone.

Molly added that airport staff were not being told any details either, so they were unable to help.

"Getting through security was even more like hell," she continued. "The gates to scan your boarding pass were only working for those who had original flights after this time so the rest of us had to go out of the queue and to a different one.

"Thankfully our flight got delayed so we made it through but even the boards in the departures [have] not been updated at all. We got a couple texts from Jet2 about the delays but nothing else really."

According to Flightradar24, Molly's flight to Ibiza is now due to depart at 10am, as of 10.15am.
