The Congress party stated on Sunday that the personal attacks made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma against party's deputy leader Gaurav Gogoi in the Lok Sabha are aimed at diverting attention from the BJP leader's alleged "corruption and misdeeds."
Gogoi, who represents Jorhat in Parliament, condemned Sarma for accusing him of having ties with Pakistan and questioned the Chief Minister's mental state regarding state issues. Assam is set to hold assembly elections next year.
In a series of posts on 'X', Gogoi described Sarma's recent remarks as "madness and nonsense," asserting that he was behaving like an "IT cell troll" without presenting any facts.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh strongly criticized Sarma's allegations, stating, "The personal attacks by the Chief Minister of Assam on my colleague Gaurav Gogoi are worse than brutal. Mr. HBS (Himanta Biswa Sarma) fails to understand that a year ago, the people of Jorhat voted overwhelmingly in favor of Gaurav Gogoi, completely rejecting the campaign run by the Chief Minister and his associates."
Ramesh further remarked, "These attacks are also intended to distract from the Chief Minister's own corruption and misdeeds. He is well aware that he is the outgoing Chief Minister of Assam, which is why his desperation is increasing."
Earlier in the day, Gogoi targeted Sarma, stating, "For reasons known only to him, I have been in his crosshairs since entering Assam. Over the past 13 years, he has made numerous baseless comments about me. The latest remark is madness and absurd." He also expressed concern for the Chief Minister's health.
Gogoi added, "It is often said that when there are troubles at home, it affects a person's mental state. We will ensure that he gets some rest after 2026."
