Zeppelin's Robert Plant has revealed the band's one "horrific" song, and why he thinks he ruined it. The legendary artist was the lead singer and lyricist of the rock band from its founding in 1968 until their breakup in 1980, before going on to have a .
However, despite all Led Zeppelin's hit songs, that sticks out as particularly poor, and the reason is because of him. The musician revealed that the band's 1969 version of the folk hit Babe I'm Gonna Leave You is not one of his favourites. He told : "I realised that tough, manly approach to singing I'd begun on You Better Run wasn't really what it was all about at all.
"Songs like Babe I'm Gonna To Leave You... I find my vocals on there horrific now. I really should have shut the f*** up!"
Previously performed by folk sensation Joan Baez, Led Zeppelin recorded their version after guitarist Jimmy Page heard her rendition. Page played the song for Plant during their first meeting at his home in 1968.
The band's tour manager, Richard Cole, claims their version came about when Plant played Page the guitar part that eventually made the cut, though Page refutes this.
and added hard rock elements with an electric guitar, more than doubling the length of the original.
After the band disbanded in 1980 following the death of their drummer, John Bonham, Plant continued to have a successful solo career.
Despite briefly considering abandoning music to pursue a career as a teacher, the singer went on to this day.
His latest album, Raise The Roof (Deluxe Edition), was released in 2021 and is a joint project with American country and bluegrass singer Alison Krauss.
