As soon as the trailer of Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par dropped online, trolls started going after the superstar and the film calling for the its boycott.

The reason behind the boycott calls was Aamir Khan’s visit to Turkey and meeting the Turkish President in 2017 and the country’s official support to Pakistan during the recent conflict with India.

Now, in an interview with ABP News, Suniel Shetty has defended Aamir Khan as well as Sitaare Zameen Par amid the ongoing boycott calls.

When asked if every Bollywood celebrity is expected to voice their opinion on national issues, Suniel replied, “Humesha Bollywood ke peeche pade rehte hain. Bollywood doesn't come forward in this. Desh ke baare mein hoga toh politicians baat karenge, desh ke hit mein hoga toh hum definitely support karenge, that’s why we even make such films.”

He added, “We are trying to do our job. Speaking about my industry, I can say there are more India-centric individuals here than anywhere else in the world.”

Suniel was then asked about the boycott calls against Aamir Khan and his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, he responded, “People should forget the past. The past history does not represent today's time. Turkey’s situation then and now are very different. So what we do going forward should be our own decision, rather than judging based on the past.”

Suniel also talked about how celebrities are often targeted for no mistake of their own, “People should forget the past. The past history does not represent today's time. Turkey’s situation then and now are very different. So what we do going forward should be our own decision, rather than judging based on the past.”

He then gave his own example and said, “This has happened so many times with me—someone with a controversial background is standing next to me, and I have no idea. Hum to waise bhi dono taraf se maar hi khaate rehte hain.”

He also shared an example of an incident that happened with him, “I once attended an event hosted by a company that looked very promising. Two years later, it turned out to be a scam. It becomes extremely difficult to differentiate and judge people or organizations in such scenarios.”
