If you also get the FASTag scanned by holding it in your hand instead of sticking it on the windscreen of the vehicle, then be cautious now. NHAI, i.e., National Highway Authority of India, has made it clear that now such "Loose FASTag" will be blacklisted. That is, if the tag is not stuck on the vehicle, then your Fastag can stop working at any time, and then trouble is certain at the toll plaza.
What is a Loose FASTag?
Loose FASTag means an active FASTag that is not stuck on the windscreen of the vehicle, but is being used by holding it in hand or by keeping it on the dashboard. Some people do this deliberately so that one tag can be used in multiple vehicles. This method is like cheating the toll system, and according to NHAI, this will no longer be tolerated.
Why did NHAI take this strict decision?
NHAI had said in a press release on July 11, 2025, that due to Loose FASTag, many types of problems are being faced at the toll plaza. Like-
The lane gets jammed.
Scanning gets delayed..
Wrong chargebacks and complaints come.
Many people try to take out the truck using the car's FASTag.
There is a glitch in the toll system, and other passengers face trouble.
NHAI says that to make electronic toll collection better and transparent, such negligence will no longer be tolerated.
What will be the process of FASTag blacklisting?
The authority has instructed toll collection agencies and travel operators that if they see any loose FASTag, they should immediately report it to NHAI. A dedicated email ID has also been given for this. After receiving the report, NHAI will immediately blacklist or hotlist that FASTag. That is, that tag can no longer be used again.
Problems for vehicle owners will increase.
If your FASTag gets blacklisted, then first of all, you will have to pay cash again at the toll plaza. Secondly, you will have to apply again for a new tag, and this will waste both time and money. Apart from this, if you repeatedly use a loose FASTag, then strict action can also be taken against you in the future.
According to NHAI, new systems like multilane free flow tolling and annual pass systems are going to be implemented in the near future. In such a situation, it is necessary that the FASTag of every vehicle is properly pasted on the windscreen and is properly linked with the system.
What should a common FASTag user do?
If you have not yet pasted your FASTag on the vehicle, then do this work today.
Stick it inside the windscreen at the right place
Do not use it in another vehicle
Instead of buying from a local vendor, buy it from an authorized portal or bank
The purpose of this rule is not to trouble anyone, but to make travel fast, easy and transparent across the country. If you follow the rules, then your journey will also be completed without interruption and stress.
