The end of their relationship forms the beginning of the film. As much as the audience loved hating Mahesh, Shaan is enjoying the response received by the romantic musical on the first day. In an exclusive interview with Zoom, the actor shared his thoughts on playing the antagonist.
Shaan Grover recalls attending chemistry workshops for Saiyaara
Shaan told Zoom that before going on floors and even while shooting, he and Aneet attended chemistry workshops to get to know each other well. "Aneet and I had chemistry workshops. They were for us to bond with each other. When we have rehearsed, those scenes flow easily," he said before adding, "It was also to show that we dated for five years. For the backstory in the original script I had read, we had dated for five years and that's a long relationship. It shouldn't have felt that we met 2-3 months ago."
Praising his co-stars Aneet and Ahaan Panday for working towards delivering their best, Shaan said, "Aneet and Ahaan have been working hard day in and out; it is their film. For me to step in and show that we've dated for five years, we had to take those workshops and rehearsals and they helped a lot."
'People like Mahesh exist'
Criticising the character's moral values, Shaan shared, "When we went on set and stepped into our characters, we were prepared. Of course, it is not easy to play such characters. I am not Mahesh Iyer. That's not how I function, and my brain functions. I was gullibly thinking ki Mahesh jaise log hote hai iss duniya mein? A friend of mine experienced something similar and couldn't stop crying while watching Aneet's performance in Saiyaara. Her 7-year-long relationship broke because her partner didn't want to marry and then ghosted her. That's when I realised that people like Mahesh do exist."
Saiyaara, directed by Mohit Suri, is produced by Yash Raj Films. It released on July 18 in theatres worldwide.
