Well-known writer and activist Fatima Bhutto is collaborating with Indian journalist and author Sonia Faleiro to co-edit a new book titled Gaza: The Story of a Genocide. The book aims to document the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and raise global awareness about the suffering of the Palestinian people.
The book will be published on October 7, 2025, by Verso Books. All proceeds from the publication will go to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) to directly support Palestinian communities affected by war.
The book cover was recently revealed on Instagram in partnership with Fatima Bhutto, Sonia Faleiro, Verso Books, and the campaign group Books for Gaza.
Gaza: The Story of a Genocide is being described as a powerful and urgent anthology. It includes personal stories, poetry, war reporting, art, and photography. Each piece in the book is meant to reflect both the pain of the conflict and the strength of resistance.
The cover has been designed by Chantal Jahchan. It features symbols of Palestinian culture such as the traditional keffiyeh scarf and olive trees — both widely seen as icons of Palestinian identity and struggle.
The book includes contributions from writers and artists who have received international awards such as the Palestine Book Award, Arab American Book Award, National Book Award, Pulitzer Prize, Gandhi Peace Award, and Emmy Awards.
Voices featured in the collection come from different corners of the Palestinian diaspora. These include poets, survivors, journalists, and globally recognized authors.
The book shares the heartbreaking story of Ahmed Alnaouq, who lost 21 family members in an airstrike. Another contributor, Noor Al Yaqoubi, discusses how starvation is being used as a weapon of war. Mariam Barghouti writes about the rising settler violence in the West Bank. Iman Bashir tells the story of a wounded child who lost his entire family in the war.
The anthology includes powerful images and artistic pieces along with first-hand testimonies. Together, they portray the deep trauma of Gaza’s people while also capturing their courage and resilience.
The book is partially dedicated to Hiba Abu Nada, a respected Palestinian poet who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on October 20, 2023, in Khan Younis.
Fatima Bhutto has long been an outspoken supporter of Palestinian freedom, both on social media and global platforms. With this book, she and her co-editor aim to preserve Palestinian memory, highlight the truth of the genocide, and inspire global solidarity.
