Pitru Paksha 2025: Tarpan remains incomplete without naming Swadha Devi! Know why this mantra is necessary

Tarpan is incomplete without chanting this mantra!

Pitru Paksha 2025: During the days of Pitrupaksha, a tradition of Shraddha and Tarpan is played in every house. It is believed that the soul of ancestors comes to this period to get blessings and satisfaction from its descendants, but it is also a very important belief that if the name or mantra of Swadha Devi is not taken at the time of tarpan, then the ancestors do not accept food. In such a situation, the tarpan remains incomplete and the virtue of Shraddha is also not received completely.

Who is Swadha Devi?

In the scriptures, Swadha Devi is considered to be the power to fulfill the ancestors. Just as the word Swaha is used for the fulfillment of the gods, similarly the pronunciation of Swadha is necessary for the ancestors. This is the reason that at the end of every Tarpan Mantra, the word Swadha is attached.

Why is the tarpan incomplete without a self -minded mantra

It is believed that till the time of Tarpan or Shraddha, until Swadha is pronounced thrice, the sesame, water or food does not reach the ancestors. This is the reason that the priest speaks Tasmai Swadha Namah with every offering while offering it three times. If this mantra is left, then the ancestors return without taking the banquet and the purpose of the tarpan remains incomplete.

Popular mantra

The mantra that is often spoken in the Tarpan method is as follows

Om Sarva Pitra Deva Namah.

Tasmai Swadha Namah. Tasmai Swadha Namah. Tasmai Swadha Namah.

Apart from this, mantras like ॐ Aryama na Tripyatam Idam Tilodakam Tasmai Swadha Namah are also used in Tarpan.

The secret of chanting three times

The reason for chanting the mantra thrice is not just a tradition but a belief that it is a symbol of Trikala (ghost, present, future). Every time is called to satisfy the ancestors, hence the tarpan is considered to be fulfilled by water offering three times and the mantra three times.

If you are performing Tarpan or Shraddha in Pitrupaksha, then keep in mind that the name of Swadha Devi and her mantra chanting is mandatory without its tarpan. The fulfillment of ancestors is possible only when the offering in the name of Swadha Devi is completed.
