The Premier League teams were seen sporting red poppies on their shirts during the weekend matches.

The poppies are worn during the first two weeks of November as a tribute to the sacrifice of the British armed forces from World War I.

Activities such as periods of silence and wreaths were being laid ahead of kick-offs while the players and match officials wore special-edition shirts embroidered with poppies.

In the past, players have chosen not to sport the poppy. Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic refused to wear it because it reminded him of when his village was bombed when he was 12 years old.
