A recent survey has revealed the top 10 safest countries of 2026, and the United Kingdom doesn't even feature. The research was carried out by Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection. The travel insurance company uses responses from travellers, data from Numbeo, the Global Peace Index, and GeoSure Global scores to "calculate a weighted score that reflects each country's overall safety".
The recent release comes in handy as many holidaymakers will already be thinking about which country to visit next year, and when it comes to selecting a destination, knowing that it is safe for travellers is one of the most important things. Fortunately, a number of these spots are just a few hours away from the UK.
The Netherlands was named as the safest country. The beautiful country, noted as a "peace-loving place," was crowned the number one spot due to its high Global Peace Index rates and its status as a safe destination for female travellers, LGBTQIA+ travellers, and travellers of colour.
"We're seeing a shift in how travellers define 'safe'," a Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection spokesperson told Travel and Leisure. "It's not just about crime rates anymore, people are also considering healthcare access, climate stability and inclusivity.
"Survey respondents felt the Netherlands excels across all those verticals, which is why it's resonating so strongly with travellers heading into 2026."
In second place is Australia, which earns its highest marks for being near the top in safety from terrorism. The sunny destination was also ranked second in last year's survey.
Austria, which was a new addition to the survey, is recognised as one of the most peaceful countries in the world, according to the World Peace Index.
The scenic country, particularly known for its picturesque Alpine landscapes, musical heritage, and imperial palaces, came in third place in the survey.
Iceland and Canada followed behind, completing the top five. Both destinations fell in the ranking after making the top three last year. However, they are noted as peaceful countries, with Iceland being the most peaceful in the world, and Canada being one of the most peaceful in North America.
While the noted destinations may be generally safe for travellers, it is always important to check ahead of travelling to any country and abide by the Foreign Office's travel advice.
Although the UK did not make the top 10, it did place 14th.
