There is a description about the form and story of Mother Tulsi in Brahmavaivarta Purana, according to which Tulsi, whose name was also Vrinda, was the wife of the demon Shankhachuda. Once a war broke out between the demon Shankhachud and the gods. But due to the purity and chastity of Vrinda, the gods were not able to kill the demon Shankhachuda. Then Lord Vishnu took the form of Shankhachud to support the gods and kill the demon. Then Tulsi’s chastity was violated. Due to which all the powers of Vrinda would be destroyed and Lord Shiva killed Shankhachuda.

When Vrinda came to know the truth about Lord Vishnu, she cursed Lord Vishnu to turn into a stone. Accepting the curse of Vrinda, Lord Vishnu said that now he will be worshiped as Shaligram and Tulsi will always be worshiped as a revered and sacred plant on earth. Since then, every year the festival of Tulsi-Shaligram marriage is celebrated on the awakening of Lord Vishnu on Devuthani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. In this way, Vrinda started being worshiped as Tulsi in everyone’s courtyard.
