Synopsis

In the wake of a VBIED explosion close to the historic Red Fort, investigators are scrutinizing Dr. Umar Nabi's potential involvement. DNA samples are being collected to pinpoint the identities of the deceased victims. Thankfully, the premature blast curtailed the damage. This marks the second VBIED attack attributed to Jaish-e-Mohammad, with connections emerging to a terror network in Faridabad.

New Delhi: A day after a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) killed at least 12 persons near the Red Fort, investigators are probing whether Dr Umar Nabi was involved in the suicide mission and are trying to match his DNA among the dead at hospital. Nabi's family has been contacted to provide their DNA sample to confirm his identity.

Officials said that the bomb was premature and not fully developed, thus limiting the impact. The explosion did not create a crater, and no shrapnel or projectiles were found, they said.

This is the second time that banned Jaish-e-Mohammad has carried out the attack using VBIED after the 2019 Pulwama attack in which 40 CRPF soldiers were killed. JeM was involved in the attack. Sources said IED was assembled using ammonium nitrate and the interstate plot is linked to the Faridabad terror module in which J&K Police, along with Faridabad cops, arrested multiple suspects and seized arms and explosives in large quantities.

Investigators suspect that soon after the Faridabad module was busted, Nabi panicked as police were searching for him and switched off his phone. "It is possible that the bomber triggered the suicide mission before he could be arrested," said an official.

Earlier in the day, Union home minister Amit Shah chaired two meetings, after which he said, "Every culprit will be hunted down." The first meeting was attended by Union home secretary Govind Mohan, Intelligence Bureau chief Tapan Deka, DG of NIA, and Commissioner of Police of Delhi. J&K DGP joined the meeting via video conference.

The second meeting was attended by Govind Mohan, Deka, DG of National Security Guards, DG of NIA, Director of Forensic Science Services, Chief Director of Forensic Science Laboratory, Delhi, and other senior officials to analyse the evidence seized after the blast and the nature of IED.

Shah asked FSL to match and probe the sample collected and come up with details at the earliest. It was told to match the samples with bodies found in i20. NIA was told to probe and submit the report at the earliest.
