Tata Motors is gearing up to launch the much-anticipated petrol variants of its flagship SUVs, the Harrier and Safari, on December 9, 2025. This move will broaden the appeal of the popular models, which have, until now, only been available with diesel engines. The introduction of a petrol option is a strategic step to cater to a wider customer base and compete more effectively in the crowded mid-size SUV segment.

At the core of these new variants will be Tata’s brand-new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, direct-injection turbo-petrol engine. This T-GDI (Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection) motor was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2023. It is engineered to produce a powerful 170 horsepower and 280 Nm of peak torque. Constructed from lightweight aluminum, the engine is designed for enhanced performance and fuel efficiency.

The new engine will come with both manual and automatic transmission options, making the Harrier and Safari accessible to a broader range of buyers. The introduction of the petrol powertrain will place these SUVs in direct competition with rivals like the Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector, and Jeep Compass, all of which offer both petrol and diesel engine choices.

The petrol variants are expected to be priced slightly lower than their diesel counterparts, potentially making the Harrier and Safari a more attractive proposition for buyers who do not have high daily running or prefer the refinement of a petrol engine. While the exteriors and interiors are expected to remain largely unchanged from the recently updated diesel models, the addition of the petrol engine marks a significant update for Tata’s premium SUV lineup.
