Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi stayed in contention on Wednesday and will compete in the tie-break alongside R Praggnanandhaa and P Harikrishna in the fourth round of the Chess World Cup here.
It was a relatively calm day in the knockout stage as the two previous round winners Levon Aronian from the United States and Joss Martinez Alcantara from Mexico advanced to the fifth round or pre-quarterfinals by eliminating Radoslaw Wojtaszek of Poland and Alexey Sarana of Slovenia respectively after drawing their games.
Uzbek GM Nodirbek Yakubboev and Vietnam’s Le Quang Liem ended the campaigns of V Pranav and V Karthik leaving only three Indians in the running for the three World Cup spots that lead to the Candidates Tournament.
For Erigaisi and Praggnanandhaa it was a straightforward day but Harikrishna faced some challenges before securing a place in the tie-break.
Aronian in top form only needed a draw and accomplished it comfortably against Radoslaw Wojtaszek who had the white pieces.
Karthik and Pranav tried to create complications but their efforts didn’t succeed against Le Quang Liem of Vietnam and Nodirbek Yakubboev of Uzbekistan.
