In today’s busy life, the biggest lesson for children is that happiness is not in expensive things or gadgets, but in simplicity. While children in cities are limited to screens, shopping malls and online classes, a small village Sarmoli in Uttarakhand connects them with real life. Here children learn to live in harmony with nature, how small things can bring great happiness, and how a “sustainable lifestyle” is not just a term, but a way of life. Located near Munsiyari, this village is famous for its serene valleys, snow-clad Panchachuli peaks and women-run eco-homestays. There is a new lesson hidden at every turn. From farming to wool weaving, forest walks to bird watching, every day gives children a new experience to connect with nature and live responsibly.

Day 1: Arrive at an eco-homestay and immerse yourself in local life
On reaching Sarmoli, first stay at one of the eco-homestays run by women. These houses are made of local materials like wood, stone and mud, which keep them warm in winter and cool in summer. Here you will get to experience authentic Himalayan hospitality, with dishes like bhang chutney, madua roti, pahari rajma and jhangora kheer.
Here children not only play but also learn by understanding the importance of avoiding unnecessary wastage on things like water, electricity and food. In many homestays, children tend kitchen gardens, learn to compost organic waste and plant trees with their own hands.

Day 2: Forest walk and nature school
On the second day, wake up early in the morning and go on a jungle trek with a local guide. Along the way, children will see mulberry, rhododendron and pine trees. This experience teaches them much more than books: trees not only provide oxygen, but also play an important role in maintaining the balance of the mountains.

If the family is interested in adventure activities, consider a short trip to the nearby Milam Glacier or Nanda Devi National Park. Here, children can learn to recognize animal footprints, identify birds by their calls, and explore the woods responsibly.

Day 3: Farming work and sowing seeds
On day three, spend a day with local farmers in Sarmoli. Here, children understand the hard work that goes into growing each grain and why organic farming is more important than chemical fertilizers. Farmers explain how to maintain soil health and why seed conservation is important. As a family activity, you can plant a tree together. As children watch it grow, they understand the true meaning of caring for nature.

Day 4: Learn from artisans – Wool weaving and bamboo crafts
Many women and artisans in Sarmoli practice traditional wool weaving and bamboo crafts in their homes. On this day, children get an opportunity to see and learn village handicrafts. They can learn to spin wool, dye using natural methods and make small decorative items from bamboo. It’s not just art; It is a lesson in patience, concentration and hard work. Here, they understand that ‘living slow’ does not mean laziness, but true dedication towards every task.

Day 5: Bird world and a morning in Panchachuli
On the last day, take an early morning trail ride beneath the snow-clad peaks of Panchachuli. On the way you will see Himalayan monal, eagles and different types of pheasants. As the sun rays fall on the peaks, along with the bird watching, the view is so beautiful that children will remember it forever. This walk is not just a ‘morning walk’; It is a relaxing experience. Here children realize that true happiness can be found only in sitting peacefully and enjoying the air.
