Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh’s one of the most awaited films of the year De De Pyaar De 2 has finally hit the big screens. The film explores family dynamics and generational differences continuing the story of Ashish Mehra and his much younger girlfriend Ayesha Khurana. The narrative shifts focus from their initial romance to the challenges of meeting and blending with each other’s families. While the first film relied heavily on light-hearted comedy and charm this sequel attempts to tackle deeper emotional and relational layers navigating family expectations secrets and misunderstandings.
What is the plot?
The film begins with a short flashback of Ashish and Ayesha’s first love story giving viewers context for their relationship. From there the story moves to the present where Ashish meets Ayesha’s family for the first time. The drama unfolds when Ayesha returns to her progressive modern family who do not hold orthodox views. The story kicks off in earnest when an incident involving her sister-in-law’s pregnancy triggers tension and comedy.
Ayesha tries to introduce Ashish to her family while keeping a major secret his age. This leads to a series of misunderstandings humorous situations and family drama that build up to the climax which has some interesting and fun moments but falls short of fully engaging the audience.
How were the performances?
Ajay Devgn: Ajay’s portrayal of Ashish feels flat and lacks the energy that made his character entertaining in the first film. He struggles to carry both the comedic and emotional moments convincingly which impacts the overall charm of the film.
Rakul Preet Singh: Rakul as Ayesha sometimes appears overdramatic particularly in emotional sequences. While she attempts to balance humor and sentiment her performance occasionally overshoots reducing the believability of her chemistry with Ajay.
R. Madhavan: Madhavan as Ayeshas father stands out as a highlight. His natural charm and subtle humor especially in scenes with Gautami Kapoor provide some of the film’s most enjoyable moments. His delivery feels effortless making him a stabilizing presence in the story.
Gautami Kapoor: Gautami matches Madhavan’s energy perfectly offering grace wit and poise. Their on-screen chemistry is one of the few relationships in the film that feels genuine contributing memorable sequences.
Meezaan Jafri: Meezaan brings a youthful spark and Punjabi swag to his role. His playful lighthearted sequences are entertaining adding a refreshing energy to the narrative.
Javed Jaaferi: Javed’s comic timing and presence lift the humor in several scenes. His contribution keeps the lighter side of the film afloat and makes his moments memorable especially with Ajay Devgn. Meanwhile the rest of the supporting cast perform adequately though none leave a lasting impression.
How was the comedy and music?
Comedy in De De Pyaar De 2 is inconsistent. While some sequences elicit genuine laughter most humor appears in scattered bits failing to maintain a continuous comic rhythm. The film’s music is moderately enjoyable. Songs like 3 Shaukk and Jhoom Sharaabi are catchy and likely to linger in audiences’ minds. The background score by Hitesh Sonik supports the narrative effectively enhancing emotional and humorous moments without being intrusive.
How was the cinematography and editing?
Cinematographer Sudhir K. Chaudhary captures contrasting settings effectively from the cozy chaotic spaces of Ashish’s life to the more organized and spacious home of Ayesha’s family. The visuals help highlight the differences between the characters’ worlds. Editing by Chetan M. Solanki keeps the story moving steadily although some sequences in the second half could have benefited from tighter cuts to maintain momentum.
Rakul Preet Singh and Meezaan Jafri’s chemistry
One of the pleasant surprises in De De Pyaar De 2 is the unexpected chemistry between Rakul Preet Singh and Meezaan Jafri. Their scenes together bring freshness and playful energy to the screen. Meezaan’s effortless charm and Rakul’s vibrant personality complement each other well creating moments that feel more natural and engaging than her pairing with Ajay Devgn. Their light banter and easy camaraderie add a spark that the main romance sometimes lacks.
How was the direction and writing?
The captain of the ship Anshul Sharma tries to balance romance comedy and family drama but struggles to maintain a consistent tone. While Luv Ranjan and Tarun Jain’s writing has delivered fun films in the past here the story feels uneven with forced humor and rushed emotional beats. The climax offers a few enjoyable moments but cannot fully redeem the narrative’s weaknesses.
The overall verdict for De De Pyaar De 2
De De Pyaar De 2 has occasional charm with strong performances from Madhavan Gautami Meezaan and Javed. However the lead pair’s underwhelming chemistry inconsistent comedy and a somewhat predictable story make the sequel feel like a half-baked continuation rather than a compelling addition. Overall it is an average sequel with glimpses of fun and warmth but lacks the cohesion and spark of the original film.
