Some films arrive quietly and then rewrite history becoming more than just movies. Roi Roi Binale belongs to that rare league. As Assam continues to celebrate the extraordinary run of Zubeen Garg’s final film a storm has hit the industry from an unexpected corner. Just when the state was embracing the emotion of watching the late singer’s last on-screen work news broke of a piracy leak that has left fans furious and the makers shaken. The film which opened to packed theatres on October 31 has already crossed Rs 16 crore in just 12 days a staggering figure for Assamese cinema. But even before the celebrations could settle clips of the film began circulating online derailing the mood around what should have been a milestone moment for regional filmmaking. Who has been arrested in the piracy case? The Assam Police confirmed on Thursday that Rafiqul Islam a YouTuber from Lakhipur in Goalpara district has been arrested for allegedly uploading portions of Roi Roi Binale on his channel Rafiqul R Vlogs. His detention comes after the producers flagged multiple unauthorised accounts posting scenes from the film only days after its theatrical release. According to a report by News18 Islam was presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court and has been remanded to three days of police custody. The case has been filed at the Cyber Police Station in Panbazar. What charges has he been booked under? The list of charges makes it clear how seriously the authorities view the breach. Islam has been booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code the Information Technology Act of 2000 the Copyright Act of 1957 and the Cinematograph Act of 1952. For an industry already vulnerable to piracy this case is being treated as a necessary stand to protect creative work. Producer Shyamantak Gautam complained after discovering that key scenes were being shared online at the peak of the film’s theatrical run. As Roi Roi Binale was drawing massive crowds and stirring nostalgic emotions across the state the leak threatened to impact the film’s momentum. Why is the leak especially hurtful this time? In regional cinema where revenue windows are short-lived early leaks can drastically affect collections. But with Roi Roi Binale the wound runs deeper. This is the last film of Zubeen Garg a cultural figure whose music voice and presence shaped generations in Assam and beyond. What happened to Zubeen Garg? Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19 in Singapore. He had travelled there for the North East Festival and was scheduled to perform on the very day he was rescued from the sea under mysterious circumstances. Though he was rushed to a hospital and admitted to the ICU he could not be saved. For countless fans watching Roi Roi Binale has been a bittersweet experience a celebration wrapped in grief.
