Colin Montgomerie has thrown his support behind Tiger Woods should the golf legend decide to compete on the PGA Champions Tour. Woods hasn't featured in a Tour event since the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon, where the 15-time major winner failed to make the cut.
The 49-year-old has been forced to deal with several injury concerns in recent years, most recently undergoing surgery to replace a disc in his back just last month. The 2019 Masters champion is eyeing a comeback to professional golf next year, though questions remain over whether Woods can reclaim his former dominance.
With Woods celebrating his 50th birthday in December, he would become eligible for the PGA Tour Champions circuit from next year onwards.
Speculation has already emerged that Woods might feature on the Champions Tour next year following his recovery from injury. Montgomerie, who captained Team Europe to Ryder Cup glory in 2010, has embraced the prospect of Woods joining the PGA Tour Champions circuit next year.
"I think it would be super for the [PGA Tour Champions] if Tiger is able to play. Great for sponsors, TV, etc," Montgomerie said this week, via reporter Garrett Johnston.
"And we will all begin our rounds looking for his name on the board. Where is he? Do we have a chance? Hopefully we do, but maybe not."
Montgomerie's remarks arrive more than a year after the 62-year-old cast doubt on Woods' ability to compete at professional level. "I hope people remember Tiger as Tiger was, the passion and the charismatic aura around him," Montgomerie said in an interview with The Times last year.
"There is none of that now. At Pinehurst, he did not seem to enjoy a single shot, and you think; 'What the hell is he doing?' He's coming to Troon and he won't enjoy it there, either."
With Woods absent from Tour competition for over 12 months, the five-time Masters winner has plummeted to his lowest position since becoming a professional in the 1990s.
Woods currently sits at No.2375 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), and he keeps tumbling further down the standings while side-lined recovering from injury.
Whether Woods will feature on the PGA Tour Champions next year or stage his comeback on the PGA Tour for the 2026 campaign remains uncertain.
Woods might be eyeing participation in the Masters at Augusta National in 2026, where the golfing legend will be eligible to play, due to his status as a former winner with his five green jackets.
