Meta is rolling out support for new Indian languages across its platforms, Instagram, Facebook, and the Edits app. The announcement was made at the House of Instagram event in Mumbai on Friday. According to the Menlo-Park-based company, these updates will help creators expand their reach and interact with new audiences. The new announcements include expanding Meta AI translations to Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, and other languages.
New Features on Instagram and Facebook
According to Meta's press note, creators will soon be able to translate their Reels into five new Indian languages—Bengali, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu—using Instagram's dub and lip-sync capabilities. This support is being rolled out to both Facebook and Instagram.
Meta says its dubbing tool uses Meta AI to make Reels look and sound fluent in the translated languages. The company claims that it maintains the tone and style of the creator's voice to make the content appear authentic. The lip-sync feature syncs the translated audio to the speaker's mouth movements, making it appear as if they are actually speaking the same language. Before this rollout, support for the dubbing feature was released for English, Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese.
In addition, Instagram's Edits app is also receiving new Indian fonts. This app is offered as an on-the-go video editing solution. It supports high-quality video capture, keyframing, automatic captions, and camera settings like resolution, frame rate, and dynamic range.
With this expansion, creators can now style their text and captions with Devanagari and Bengali-Assamese script in Assamese, Bengali, Hindi, and Marathi. The company stated that this update will be rolled out to Android in the coming days.
Here's how to use the feature:
Open the Edits app and go to the project you want to edit.
In the editing timeline, go to the Text section in the tools tray at the bottom.
Tap the Aa icon to see all available fonts.
Instagram says that if the device is already in Devanagari or Bengali-Assamese script, the new fonts will automatically appear in the Fonts tab by default. Otherwise, creators can filter fonts by language by swiping down in the 'All Fonts' tab.
