Vivek Chaturvedi to lead India's top body for indirect taxes

Senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Vivek Chaturvedi has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his appointment. He succeeds Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, who retired on November 28.

Chaturvedi is a 1990-batch IRS officer and currently serves as a Member of CBIC overseeing its Tax Policy and Legal wings.

Chaturvedi has over 30 years of experience in India's indirect tax system.

Before his current role, he served as the Principal Director General of Vigilance and Chief Vigilance Officer at CBIC.

He also headed the Directorate General of Analytics and Risk Management (DGARM), where he led projects using data to reduce tax evasion and improve administration efficiency.

As the new CBIC Chairman, Chaturvedi will lead India's top body for indirect taxes, including GST, customs duties, and central excise.

He will guide policy decisions, improve enforcement measures, and make trade processes smoother.

His leadership is expected to help with ongoing reforms and make tax administration more effective.

The CBIC is a statutory body under the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance.
