A deep depression in the Bay of Bengal has shifted southeast towards the East Coast, prompting a red alert for Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvallur. Heavy rainfall is expected until Tuesday morning. Following orders from district officials late Monday night, schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Kanchipuram will remain closed as a precaution. Chennai Collector Roshni Siddharth Jagde has announced the holiday due to the likelihood of intense rain and flooding.
Due to the anticipated heavy rainfall from Cyclone Ditwah, all educational institutions in Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Kanchipuram will be closed on Tuesday. In light of the heavy rain warning issued by the India Meteorological Department, district collectors have declared a holiday for schools and colleges in these areas. Residents are advised to stay cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and adhere to the advisories issued by the state government and disaster management agencies.
The effects of Cyclone Ditwah have led to continuous rainfall in Chennai and surrounding districts, causing flooding in roads, highways, and low-lying residential areas. Moderate to heavy rain was reported in Chennai, particularly in the AGS Colony area of Velachery, where a car was submerged, and a government bus was stranded due to sudden flooding in Poonamallee, requiring assistance from a JCB machine to be rescued. Traffic disruptions were noted in several areas, including the Kathipara flyover.
The weather department has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Chennai and Tiruvallur districts until Tuesday morning due to Cyclone Ditwah. The heavy rains in the Cauvery Delta districts have devastated crops. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed concern for farmers in these districts, ordering immediate compensation from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for losses incurred during the northeast monsoon that began in October, affecting rice and other agricultural crops, as well as human lives, livestock, and homes.
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin inspected relief operations related to the rainfall at the Greater Chennai Corporation's integrated command and control center, alongside Minister P.K. Shekhar Babu from the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, Chennai Mayor R. Priya, and other senior officials. A deep depression over the sea east of Chennai is causing the persistent rainfall, leading airport authorities to cancel 10 flights.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Ditwah has weakened into a deep depression and is expected to remain in this state for the next 24 hours. The IMD also indicated that rainfall could continue in the coming hours due to the cyclone's influence.
