The government is continuously working towards making the rules to digital security and communication more stringent in India. In this context, the discussion about a new proposed rule to WhatsApp and other messaging apps is intense these days. Accordingly, it may now be necessary to have an active SIM card in the phone to continue using messaging services. Not only this, according to some reports, if the active SIM is not confirmed for a long time, the platform can also automatically logout the account. This proposal has come out with the aim of strengthening digital identity and message verification.
Sources say that the government wants to curb fake numbers, anonymous accounts and fraudulent profiles on communication platforms. Recent years have seen a rise in cyber crimes, financial fraud and spam messages. Many scammers keep WhatsApp accounts active by using inactive or temporary SIMs and commit crimes in different states. To prevent such cases, emphasis is being laid on the necessity of having an active and verified mobile number.
The purpose of the rule is to ensure that the number appearing on the messaging app is actually legitimate and active. It is believed that when the new rules are implemented, if a user’s number does not appear active on the network for 6 hours, the app can temporarily log him out for security reasons. After this the user will have to complete the login process again, in which OTP verification will be mandatory. This will automatically deactivate the WhatsApp account associated with any fake or old number.
Many cyber experts believe that this step is necessary to strengthen digital security, as crimes committed through fake numbers are often difficult to detect. However, some tech experts are also saying that implementing such rules may cause problems to users who have weak networks or who keep their SIMs temporarily switched off during international travel. Therefore, before implementing the rule, it will be necessary to pay attention to its practical aspects.
There has been no official statement from WhatsApp on this yet, but the company has already changed its policies in accordance with many security guidelines of the Government of India. Experts say that in the coming time, all messaging platforms will have to become more transparent about the identity of users, so that cyber crimes can be effectively stopped.
Overall, this proposed rule has the potential to take communications security to a new level. If this is implemented, users will have to be more vigilant about their SIM and number verification. Also, strict control is expected to be established on anonymous activities on digital platforms.
