Richest TV gardener exposed as Monty Don misses out on top spot

Despite his ancestors leaving behind a fortune of millions, Monty Don doesn't top the list of richest TV gardeners. The star didn't see a penny of the earnings his ancestors built up from their marmalade empire, producing what is believed to be the first commercial marmalade. His paternal grandmother was part of the famous Keiller dynasty from Dundee - and his great-grandfather owned a quarter of what was once the largest confectioners in the UK.

But by the time the company was taken over, a family feud meant Monty's side of the family didn't see any of the incredible earnings. Still, he admitted during an appearance on BBC show Who Do You Think You Are?: "We were very comfortably off. Everything was in its appropriate place, and had always been so."

It might surprise you, then, to learn that Monty isn't the richest gardener on telly. But who tops the list?

Lee Burkhill - £550,000

Lancashire-based garden designer Lee Burkhill joined BBC Garden Rescue alongside Flo Headlam, and had a reported net worth of around £550,000 when he signed up in 2023.

Lee worked in IT for more than a decade, before realising he preferred to work outdoors - and quit his full-time job for a gardening career instead. He's won plenty of awards over the years, as well as presenting his own YouTube channel Garden Ninja.

David Domoney - £3.7million

According to HonestDrop, This Morning star David Domoney's net worth is valued at anywhere between £1million and £3.7million. The Love Your Garden star has his own company, Domoney Ltd., founded in 1999 - and 2024 records showed that the company alone had a net worth of £146,191 last year, with £32,000 cash and £61,000 in total assets.

David has also bolstered those numbers working as a public speaker, writing bestselling books and selling properties. He owns a home in Italy, which includes an olive farm, and a rural cottage in Warwickshire.

The star has confessed to spending £1,000 on a single tree for his garden in the past.

Monty Don - £3.9million

According to popularnetworth.com, Monty's net worth as of 2022 was around £3.9million - though other estimates have placed him at anywhere between £1million and £4million. But in the 80s, he and his wife Sarah "lost everything".

The stock market crash of 1987 saw their successful costume jewellery business nearly go under, despite once catering to celebrity clients like Michael Jackson and Princess Diana, as access to the American markets was cut off. Monty ended up on the dole and unemployed in 1992.

He admitted: "We were lambs to the slaughter and we lost everything, [...] we lost our house, our business. We sold every stick of furniture we had at Leominster market."

Thankfully, Monty was able to build his empire back up, writing a range of bestselling books and launching into a broadcasting career.

Charlie Dimmock - £7.1million

Ground Force icon Charlie Dimmock was known as "the braless one" when she starred alongside Alan Titchmarsh and Tommy Walsh on the BBC gardening show - but she's since gone on to present her own show, Garden Rescue, and made quite the name for herself.

According to Wealthy Genius, Charlie is worth around £7.1million. She has worked as a private gardener along with her TV career, after starting out in her field as an apprentice. At the start, Charlie admitted she was earning just £32.50 per week - and had to cycle seven miles there and back to get to work.

Across her career, she's also worked as a check-in clerk for Air New Zealand, and worked as a horticulturalist at a garden centre before getting called in for a BBC screen test.

Alan Titchmarsh - £10million

Alan Titchmarsh is the richest TV gardener in the UK at the moment, according to CelebWorth.net. Worth at least £10million, the star has made an incredible career out of horticulture, and has even worked with the Royal Family.

This week, Alan confirmed that he is downsizing from his incredible £4million family home because he is "knocking on a bit" and worries about looking after the sprawling four-acre garden.

His Manor Farm House is currently on the market for £3.95million, after purchasing the Grade II-listed Georgian manor back in 2002. He admitted: "When you are knocking on a bit (which I refuse to believe, despite what the numbers tell me) you do muse on the future - a future which I hope will be long and fulfilling."
