Pakistan is currently going through its biggest talent exodus. The deteriorating economy, political instability and uncertain future have forced the country's educated and skilled professionals to move out. The situation is such that thousands of doctors, engineers and accountants have left Pakistan in the last two years. After these figures were revealed, social media users taunted and said that when there are no jobs, research and security in the country, it is natural for talent to go away.
According to the latest report of Pakistan's Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment, about 5,000 doctors, 11,000 engineers, and 13,000 accountants have left the country and gone abroad in the last two years. After these figures came out, the government is being heavily criticized. Especially because a few months ago, Army Chief Asim Munir had described this migration abroad as brain gain and not brain drain.
This migration is no longer limited to just laborers or low-wage jobs. Reports show that now a large number of white-collar professionals are also leaving Pakistan. The health sector has been most affected. According to the Express Tribune report, there has been a shocking increase of 2,144 percent in the migration of nurses between 2011 and 2024. This trend continues even in 2025, raising serious questions on the health system of the country.
Statistics show that the situation is continuously worsening. In the year 2024, 7.27 lakh Pakistanis registered for jobs abroad. Whereas by November 2025, 6.87 lakh people have registered. Former senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, while sharing these figures, said that if politics does not improve, the economy will also not improve. He also said that due to the internet shutdown, Pakistan has suffered a loss of 1.62 billion dollars and more than 23 lakh freelance jobs are at risk.
In view of the increasing migration and illegal activities, the government has increased the strictness at the airports. So far in the year 2025, 66,154 passengers have been stopped from leaving Pakistan's airports, which is almost double as compared to last year.
Apart from this, thousands of Pakistanis have been sent back from many places including Gulf countries on charges of illegal migration and begging.
