Taiwan's Defense Ministry said that 89 Chinese aircraft, 14 ships and 14 coast guard boats were roaming around the island on Monday, while four more warships were also seen in the western Pacific.
China's Maritime Safety Administration has declared 7 maritime areas around Taiwan as exercise areas. Live firing will continue in these areas till Tuesday. This exercise is considered to be the biggest so far, because its scope is larger than before and these areas are closer to Taiwan. Earlier it was told that firing would take place only in 5 areas, but later it was increased to 7.
These military exercises have also affected the common people. According to China's Transport Ministry, flights of more than 1 lakh international passengers will be affected by the exercises on Tuesday. Apart from this, about 80 domestic flights had to be cancelled.
This is China's sixth major military exercise since 2022. Even after the visit of the then US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan in 2022, China had conducted large-scale maneuvers. The current exercises are taking place at a time when Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi had said that if China attacks Taiwan, Japan can also respond militarily.
