In Bangladesh, incidents of violence against minority communities, especially Hindus, are not stopping. Two sensational incidents reported from different areas have once again raised questions on law and order and safety of minorities.

On one hand, a young man working at a petrol pump was crushed by an SUV for asking for fuel money, while on the other hand, a Hindu sweets businessman was brutally murdered by a mob.

First incident: Asked for petrol money, crushed by SUV

The first incident is from Golanda Mor in Rajbari district of Bangladesh. 30-year-old Ripon Saha, who worked at the Karim filling station here, was brutally murdered in the early hours of Friday. According to the police, a black SUV filled fuel worth around Rs 3,700 and started leaving without paying. When Ripon Saha tried to stop the car and stood in front, the driver crushed him and drove away. He died on the spot.

Former BNP leader and driver arrested

Police later seized the SUV and arrested its owner Abul Hashem alias Sujan (55) and driver Kamal Hussain (43). According to the police, Sujan has been the former district treasurer of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and former president of Jubo Dal. The police have said that they will register a case of murder.

Second incident: Hindu sweets businessman beaten to death

Another heart-wrenching incident has come to light from Ghazipur district. Here 55 year old Liton Chandra Ghosh alias Kali was beaten to death in his own sweet shop. Liton was trying to save a 17-year-old minor employee working in his shop. According to the police, after a minor altercation, a young man named Masoom Miya reached the shop with his parents and the fight escalated.

Meanwhile, Liton was hit on the head with a shovel, due to which he died on the spot. After the incident, angry local people caught the three accused and handed them over to the police. Police have registered a case of murder and investigation is ongoing.

Attacks on minorities intensified after the coup

Experts say that the situation in Bangladesh is unstable after the 2024 coup. Due to increased activism of Islamic fundamentalist organizations, attacks on Hindu, Buddhist and Christian communities have increased. According to the census of 2022, about 1.31 crore Hindus live in Bangladesh, which is about 8 percent of the total population of the country. Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council, a human rights organization working against religious discrimination, has expressed deep concern about the increasing attacks on minorities across the country.

According to the council, 51 incidents of communal violence were recorded in December 2025 alone, which clearly shows the seriousness of the situation. India has also criticized Bangladesh on this issue. The Ministry of External Affairs has said that the continuous attacks on minorities in Bangladesh are a matter of serious concern and should not be ignored.
