In Palghar district, the huge long march of Communist Party of India (Marxist) and All India Kisan Sabha regarding the issues of farmers and tribals was stopped by the police in front of the District Magistrate's office. After this the situation became tense and the entire District Magistrate complex was converted into a police cantonment. The agitators gathered and sat in front of the collector's office.

This long march started from Charoti in Dahanu tehsil on Monday morning and reached Palghar District Magistrate office at around 7 pm. More than 20 thousand protesters from tribal community including men and women took part in this march. However, the agitators are saying that a crowd of 40 thousand will join this front. When the police stopped them from moving forward, the angry agitators sat on the Boisar-Palghar road and blocked a kilometer long road and laid siege to the District Magistrate's premises.

What are the demands?

During the morcha, the leaders warned that if the government and administration did not pay attention to their demands in time, then they would sit there and agitate throughout the night. In this regard, MLA Vinod Nikolay said that if the demands are not accepted, the agitation will be further intensified.

Strict arrangements were made under the leadership of Palghar Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh to maintain law and order. A total of about two thousand police personnel have been deployed by calling six contingents of reserve police from outside. This long march is being led by Ashok Dhawale, MLA Vinod Nikolay and party state secretary Ajit Navale. The agitators remained adamant on their twelve main demands.
The main demands are as follows.

  • Forest Rights Act and PESA law should be fully implemented.
  • The proposed Wadhwan Port and Murbay Port project should be cancelled.
  • The electricity smart meter scheme should be stopped.
  • MGNREGA should be strengthened and four labor codes should be withdrawn.
  • Temple and government lands should be transferred to the names of actual landholders.

At present, there is a possibility of talks between the administration and the agitators, but if the demands are not accepted, there are indications that the movement will become more violent.
