Iran war deepens gas-oil crisis, PM Modi told what are India's preparations

The government is sensitive about the gas-oil crisis deepened by the Iran and Israel-America wars. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said this in the Lok Sabha. He said that the government is sensitive, alert and ready to provide every assistance on this issue. A large quantity of essential commodities like crude oil, gas and fertilizers come to India through the Strait of Hormuz. Since the war, movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz has become very challenging. Despite this, our government has been trying to ensure that the supply of petrol, diesel and gas is not affected much. Our focus has been on this.

  1. Prime Minister Modi said, a large quantity of crude oil, gas, fertilizers and many other essential commodities come to India through the Strait of Hormuz. Since the war started, movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz has become very difficult. Despite this, our government has tried to ensure that there is no adverse impact on the supply of petrol, diesel and gas.
  2. PM Modi said, as we all know, the country fulfills 60% of its LPG requirement through imports. Due to uncertainty in supply, the government has given priority to domestic LPG consumers. Besides, domestic production of LPG is also being increased. Continuous efforts are being made to ensure that the supply of petrol and diesel continues without any interruption in the entire country.
  3. He said, in the last decade, India has also given priority to storing crude oil for such times of crisis. Today India has a strategic petroleum reserve of more than 53 lakh metric tons. The country is working on arranging a reserve of more than 65 lakh metric tons. Our refinery capacity has also increased significantly in the last 11 years. The government is also in constant touch with suppliers from different countries.
  4. The Prime Minister said, many of our ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz have also come to India in the past. In this time of crisis, the country has another preparation which is very useful. In the last 11 years, unprecedented work has been done on the production and branding of ethanol. Till a decade ago, there was only one to one and a half percent ethanol blending capacity in the country. Today we are getting closer to 20 percent ethanol banding in petrol. Due to this, about 4.5 crore barrels less oil has to be imported every year.
  5. He said, earlier India used to import energy from 27 countries, now this figure has increased to 41. A big question is what effect will the war have on farming? The farmers of the country have filled our grain stores, so India has enough food grains. It is also our endeavor to ensure proper sowing of Kharif season. In the past years, the government has also made adequate arrangements for fertilizers to deal with emergency situations.
  6. Prime Minister Modi said, I assure the farmers of the country that the government will continue to help them in every possible way. Due to the war and the onset of summer season in India, the demand for electricity has increased. At present, adequate stock of coal is available in all the power plants of the country. India has created a record by producing more than 1 billion tonnes of coal for the second consecutive year. In the last decade, the country has also taken big steps towards renewable energy.
  7. On the West Asia conflict, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, India's role in diplomacy is clear. From the beginning we have expressed our deep concern over this conflict. I have personally spoken to all concerned leaders of West Asia. I have urged everyone to reduce tension and end the conflict. India has condemned the attacks on civilians, energy and transport infrastructure.
  8. The Prime Minister said, attacks on commercial ships and blockade of international waterways like the Strait of Hormuz are unacceptable. India is making continuous efforts through diplomacy to ensure safe movement of Indian ships even in this war-like environment. India has always advocated the welfare and peace of humanity. I reiterate that dialogue and diplomacy are the only solutions to this problem. All our efforts are aimed at reducing tensions and ending this conflict.
  9. PM Modi said, risking anyone's life in this war is not in the interest of humanity. Therefore, India's efforts are to encourage all parties to reach a peaceful solution as soon as possible.
  10. He said, when such crises arise, some elements try to take advantage of them. Therefore, agencies have been put on alert. Security is being further strengthened, be it coastal security, border security, cyber security, or strategic establishments.
