TMC will contest elections in West Bengal as well as Assam. Mamata Banerjee's party has decided to contest elections in the north-eastern state on the 'walk alone' policy. Earlier the party had planned to contest elections on 51 seats. But now it has come to light that TMC will contest elections on a total of 22 seats. The party has announced the names of the candidates. Trinamool had already made it clear that they would not be in the opposition alliance in the Assam elections. TMC is confident that by being united it can play the role of opposition in Assam.
TMC released the list of candidates in Assam in two phases. In the first list, names of 17 candidates were announced while in the second list, TMC had fielded seven candidates. Also, the candidature of Dulu Ahmed was withdrawn. This brought the total number of candidates to 23. Meanwhile, Mariani's candidate withdrew his candidature. After this the total number of candidates is now 22.
By not including the leaders who left BJP in the candidate selection, Trinamool has given an opportunity to the rebel parties, so that there is no danger of defection in future. Trinamool alleges that they want to emerge as an alternative force in the situation of Congress-BJP confusion in the state. MP Sushmita Dev said that the party is entering the elections with a definite goal. Whatever may be the result.
