Manipur: Curfew, internet shut down and heavy security forces deployed after bomb attack in Bishnupur; situation stressful

The situation has once again worsened in Manipur. The situation is very bad due to the violence that broke out after the bomb attack in Bishnupur. A senior official said about the situation that the situation is tense but peaceful in the 5 valley districts of Manipur. Violence had erupted here after the bomb attack a day earlier, and due to this two children had died. Then, in view of the worsening situation, curfew was imposed in these districts, internet services were suspended and police forces were deployed in large numbers.

The official said that no new violence was reported on Wednesday morning, but late on Tuesday night there was a clash between security forces and protesters in some areas of Imphal East and West districts. Due to this, policemen had to fire tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.

No new news of violence today

Angered by the death of two children, protesters also burnt tires on the roads in Khurai Lamlong and Wangkhei in Imphal East district, and Uripok and Kwakeithel in Imphal West district. He demanded action against those who were involved in the murder of the two children. The officer said, "After the clashes that lasted overnight, the situation has been brought under control. No new violence has been reported this morning. Overall, the situation is calm."

He said that curfew and internet service has been suspended in Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal and Kakching districts.

Bomb thrown at house, sleeping children killed

On the other hand, police said that violence broke out in Bishnupur district of Manipur on Tuesday. When two children died at their home due to the bomb thrown, while two others were shot dead in the crowd that attacked the CRPF camp in protest. A group of people set fire to two oil tankers and a truck in protest against the bomb attack, also vandalized a police post and stopped the movement of vehicles on the main roads.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh chaired an all-party meeting to review the current situation in the state. Regarding the situation, police said, it all started when suspected militants threw a bomb at a house in Moirang Tronglaobi. This incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday, when everyone in the house was sleeping. A five-year-old boy and his six-month-old sister died in this attack, while their mother was injured.

2 people died during the demonstration

Angered by the bombing incident, a mob of about 400 people attacked the CRPF camp. In response, the security forces had to open fire, in which two people died and about 20 others were injured. The protesters were angry with the security forces because they were accused of not taking action against the terrorists. On the incident, the Chief Minister condemned the bomb attack and said that its investigation will be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Representatives of political parties also expressed deep concern about law and order and stressed the need to maintain peace, unity and communal harmony.

Manipur is in the fire of violence since May 2023. So far, at least 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in the ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Jo groups of the hill areas of Imphal Valley in Manipur.
