In the depths of the Ryukyu Trench located near Japan, scientists have found a mysterious creature that has shocked experts all over the world. Identifying this creature, found approximately 30,000 feet below the sea surface, still remains a challenge for scientists. This creature appears white and almost transparent, and its finding at such a depth is very unusual in itself.
This unique discovery was made by researchers from the University of Western Australia during a special expedition near the Philippine Sea. Scientists recorded it at a depth of about 29,977 feet with the help of high-definition cameras. The thing to note is that at such a depth the water pressure is about 1,000 times more than the normal. It is considered almost impossible for any creature to survive in such conditions, but this creature was seen swimming normally there.
This mysterious creature has currently been named 'Animalia incerta sedis'. This means that scientists have not yet been able to decide its correct category. It looks like a sea slug or nudibranch, but the strange bulges on its body make it completely different from other creatures. Its physical structure is such that it does not match any sea creature known till now.
According to Professor Jameson, the Chief Scientist who led this expedition, the diversity of life in the ocean trenches around Japan is much greater than expected. During this research, scientists also found more than 1,500 stock crinoids and carnivorous sponges. The team investigated not only the Ryukyu Trench but also the Japan Trench and the Izu-Ogasawara Trench in depth. Altogether 108 different types of groups of organisms were found in these areas.
The biggest challenge before scientists is to include this new organism in any known phylum or species group. Its unique structure and behavior put it in a completely different category. This is the reason why research regarding its identification is still going on. The living conditions in these deep sea trenches are very difficult. There is neither sufficient light nor ample availability of food. Despite this, the diversity of creatures there is astonishing. According to Professor Jameson, the number of brittle stars is high in the Ryukyu Trench due to lack of food, whereas sea cucumbers are found more in the Japan Trench. This shows that the distribution of organisms varies according to the environment in every region.
This discovery has proved that there are still many such secrets hidden in the deepest and untouched parts of the Earth, about which humans have very little knowledge. Studying the depths of the ocean can play an important role in understanding new forms of life and ecosystems in the future.
