Despite warnings given in online campaigns regarding the growing Digital Arrest Scam in India, cases related to fake police calls are continuously increasing across the country. Recently, a case has come to light in Pune in which an 81-year-old father stopped the scam at the right time and saved his son from getting trapped in the trap of scammers. Let us tell you how a father's ingenuity saved his son from the trap of scammers?

What is digital arrest?

This is a kind of scam, in which fraudsters pretend to be police or government officials and scare people and take money from them. Fraudsters contact you through phone calls or apps like WhatsApp and Signal and falsely claim that the person is involved in a serious crime such as drug trafficking, money laundering or illegal parcels.

The fraudsters then threaten legal action and arrest and often force the victim to remain on the video call for hours, which is called digital arrest. After this, the victim is also warned not to talk about this to anyone. Actually, there is no such thing as digital arrest. In India, police do not arrest people through phone or video calls. This is purely a trick used by fraudsters to create panic and pressure.

As soon as you get scared, scammers take advantage of it and ask you for personal information like Aadhaar, bank information or OTP. After this they demand money in the name of closing the case. In this, the target of the scammer is to scare people into transferring money.

This is how the father saved his son

According to reports, the 81-year-old father's son, a chemical engineer by profession, received a WhatsApp call from an unknown number on April 19 at 11 am. The caller introduced himself as an officer of the Crime Branch of Mumbai Police and said that a parcel in his name had been seized. It was alleged that the parcel contained passports and narcotics.

The victim denied any connection with the parcel, but pressure started being put on the boy. The boy was told that a high-level investigation would be initiated in this matter. Shortly thereafter, the fraudsters asked the boy and his wife to install the Signal app and join a video call.

During the call, a man appeared on the screen wearing a police officer's uniform. The fraudster repeated the allegations and warned that he should not share any information with anyone. After this, he was kept on call for hours and put under mental pressure.

The fraudsters asked for Aadhaar information and bank details, they demanded Rs 12 lakh and said that the case would be closed after paying the money. The victim's father sensed something was wrong and, seeing his son under stress, intervened and the family realized it was a scam. He immediately disconnected the call and informed the police. Due to the father's prudence and immediate action, Rs 12 lakh in this case was saved from going to the fraudsters.

How to avoid Digital Arrest Scam?

  • If you receive a threat of arrest over phone or video call, immediately disconnect the call.
  • A real police officer will not ask you to stay on call or check through apps like WhatsApp or Signal.
  • Do not share personal or financial information (Aadhaar number, bank details, OTP or password) with any unknown person during the call.
  • If the caller claims to be from the police, CBI or any other authority, then understand that you are being trapped. Hang up the call immediately and contact the nearest police station.
