Bayern Munich’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß showered praise on club hero Harry Kane on Saturday evening, while simultaneously taking a dig at Spanish giants FC Barcelona.
The long-time Bavarian chief dominated the news cycle on the day of the cup final, thanks to a series of outspoken remarks that stirred debate across Europe.
It all started with a striking interview in Der Spiegel, during which Hoeneß questioned the competence of Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl. He didn’t stop there—he also took aim at Real Madrid’s incoming coach José Mourinho, who had attended the Bayern vs VfB Stuttgart cup final as a guest of the Swabians. Moreover, Hoeneß criticised supporters from both sides for using the prestigious event to demonstrate against the DFB and light up the stands with pyrotechnic protests.
His candour continued after Bayern’s commanding 3-0 victory. Appearing on ARD, Hoeneß began by praising hat-trick hero Harry Kane, stating, “That’s the best signing we’ve ever made.” The 74-year-old reiterated, “It really is the best transfer we have ever made.” Given Bayern’s long list of star acquisitions over the years, it was a striking statement. Kane had joined the German champions in 2023 for just under €100 million.
Uli Hoeneß: “FC Bayern is not a selling club.”
Following a remarkable season in which Kane contributed 68 goals and assists in 51 appearances, the England skipper has been declared untouchable by Bayern. “Of course not. FC Bayern is a club that buys players, not one that sells them,” Hoeneß insisted, addressing rumours linking FC Barcelona with a move for Kane as a possible replacement for Robert Lewandowski, whose contract is nearing its end. “Besides, Barcelona don’t have any money. That’s how it all starts,” he quipped.
The Catalan side has indeed faced severe financial challenges in recent years, often struggling to register new players due to LaLiga’s stringent wage cap. However, conditions have gradually improved, and for the upcoming season, Barcelona will return to the so-called “1:1 rule”, effectively lifting many of their transfer restrictions.
Harry Kane expected to renew with Bayern Munich
Kane, clearly touched by the recognition, expressed his gratitude for Hoeneß’s remarks. “It’s always great to hear something like that. So many incredible players have represented this club, so it’s an honour for me. Moving here was a big decision for me and my family, but I feel like I’m now part of the club’s story,” the England striker said.
The 32-year-old continued, “I’m really happy here. We’ve got an amazing squad, possibly the best in Europe, and a fantastic coach. I’m loving every moment. Nights like this are exactly why I joined.”
Kane’s current contract with Bayern runs until 2027, but the club is already planning an early extension. Sporting director Max Eberl confirmed that negotiations will be stepped up now that the season has concluded, with the goal of finalising the new deal before the World Cup.
