Gary Neville was left livid after technical glitches led to a delay in the second half of the Premier League’s final day encounter between Tottenham and Everton. While Spurs’ relegation rivals West Ham completed their fixture against Leeds United on schedule, a lack of alignment caused by VAR malfunctions triggered widespread frustration. Neville described the situation as “completely unacceptable”.

Unexpected delay disrupts second-half kickoff

The final day of the Premier League season turned chaotic when VAR equipment issues delayed the restart of Tottenham’s crucial match against Everton. The delay resulted in the game not resuming at the same time as West Ham’s clash with Leeds United. Tottenham, who had taken a first-half lead through Joao Palhinha, were battling to ensure their Premier League survival. The failure to coordinate the start times of the second halves during such a decisive afternoon immediately drew harsh criticism from fans and pundits alike.

Neville vents his anger on air

Serving as co-commentator for Sky Sports, Neville did not hold back his frustration over the lack of synchronisation between the two matches. The former Manchester United defender expressed visible anger at referee Michael Oliver, who had to halt proceedings due to the ongoing VAR technical issues. Speaking passionately, Neville said: “Why have they kicked off there if they’re supposed to be synchronising it? I don’t think a football match should be stopped for this. It’s not acceptable. I understand that technical problems happen, but this just isn’t good enough. The fans are booing — and rightly so. I’m furious about this, especially considering it’s the last game of the season and integrity is on the line.”

Dramatic ending to the relegation fight

The delay produced a strange finale to the relegation battle. West Ham comfortably defeated Leeds 3-0 with goals from Valentin Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen, and Callum Wilson. However, their match finished before normal time expired in London. Owing to the delay, the referee added nine minutes of stoppage time for Tottenham, starting after West Ham’s match had already ended. This meant the Hammers, stuck on 39 points, could only watch as Spurs clung to their 1-0 lead. Neville added: “When teams are fighting for survival, matches should always kick off together. It’s absolutely ridiculous — it’s a warm day today, but imagine if it were freezing, with players just wandering around. It’s simply not acceptable.”

What lies ahead?

Tottenham managed to hold on to their slender lead over Everton, confirming their Premier League safety with 41 points. As a result, West Ham were condemned to relegation despite their convincing victory. The Hammers now face a summer of rebuilding in the Championship, while Spurs will look to reorganise their squad under Roberto De Zerbi to avoid another turbulent season.
