Liverpool are actively searching for a new attacking talent following confirmation that Mohamed Salah will depart the club.
The Merseyside giants have reportedly identified a possible successor to fill the goalscoring void that Salah will leave behind.
The Egyptian forward, who is Liverpool’s third-highest scorer in history, announced last week that he will leave Anfield at the end of this season, even though he still has one year remaining on the contract he signed last summer.
Despite not being at his peak form this campaign, the 33-year-old has still managed to notch 10 goals and nine assists across all competitions.
Those statistics come even after Salah took part in the Africa Cup of Nations midway through the season and faced rotation challenges under manager Arne Slot.
Last season, Salah was in exceptional form, scoring 29 goals and providing 18 assists, almost single-handedly steering Liverpool into title contention. Although this term has been relatively quieter, his influence remains undeniable, and a capable replacement is now essential.
According to reports from Correio da Manha, relayed by Sport Witness, Liverpool are monitoring Sporting CP striker Luis Suarez (not the Uruguayan legend) as a potential replacement.
The 28-year-old Suarez is a natural centre-forward, unlike Salah who operates primarily on the right wing, but Liverpool’s approach seems focused on matching Salah’s goal contributions rather than his positional style.
Suarez’s output this season has been remarkable — in 25 Liga Portugal appearances, he has netted 24 goals and supplied four assists.
Liverpool, however, are not alone in pursuing the Sporting star. Newcastle United are also said to be keen, setting up a potential transfer tussle between the clubs. This comes in the wake of lingering tension after Liverpool hijacked Newcastle’s move for Hugo Ekitike last summer.
Sporting are expected to wait until after the World Cup before entertaining offers. Suarez remains under contract with the Portuguese side until 2030 and has an €80 million release clause in his deal.
In FourFourTwo’s assessment, while Suarez’s statistics are undeniably impressive, Liverpool should be cautious—Arsenal’s experience with Viktor Gyokeres serves as a reminder. The Swedish forward produced a solid first season in England but fell far short of the staggering 54 goals he recorded for Sporting the previous year.
It’s also worth considering that Suarez’s prolific numbers come playing for one of Portugal’s dominant teams in a league that lacks depth beyond its top few clubs.
According to Transfermarkt, Suarez currently holds a market valuation of €28 million.
