Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal finally triumphed in their fourth attempt at clinching the Premier League title this season, edging past Manchester City to secure the coveted English top-flight crown.

Alongside their domestic success, Arsenal also enjoyed a memorable run in the Champions League, reaching the final before falling short. As they look ahead to the 2026/27 campaign, the club now faces several key decisions in their bid to build on this historic season.

One of those decisions could come sooner rather than later, as the Gunners have reportedly attracted interest from one of Europe’s most iconic clubs regarding one of their standout performers.

Real Madrid, now under the management of returning boss Jose Mourinho, are preparing for a major summer rebuild in hopes of avoiding a third consecutive season without silverware.

The Spanish giants have already raided one Premier League side for defensive reinforcements — signing Ibrahima Konate from Liverpool — and are now targeting a similar move for Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori.

According to reports from Sport Witness and Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Arsenal are set to face a strong push for the Italy international defender this summer.

Sport Witness noted that Mourinho’s top defensive targets are Calafiori and Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol, with the Arsenal man viewed as the more attainable option between the two.

Di Marzio added that Real Madrid have already contacted Arsenal to formally express interest in Calafiori, and the north London club have responded to the initial approach.

Valued at over £45 million by Transfermarkt, Calafiori has featured for more than 2000 minutes under Arteta this season, playing a crucial role in the club’s title-winning campaign. Arsenal now face a difficult call on whether to cash in or retain the 21-year-old defender.

While Di Marzio did not comment on Arsenal’s stance regarding a potential sale, Real Madrid’s growing appeal to Premier League defenders has been evident in recent years. Calafiori’s previous experience working under Mourinho at Roma could also influence his decision.

In recent transfer windows, Dean Huijsen chose to leave Bournemouth for Real Madrid despite multiple offers from English clubs, while Ibrahima Konate turned down a new deal at Liverpool to join former teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold in La Liga. Years earlier, Antonio Rudiger made a similar move from Chelsea to Real Madrid and started in the Champions League final the following season.

Although Arsenal remain a competitive force at the top level, Calafiori’s potential departure may not be as clear-cut as those of Konate or Rudiger. History has shown that even players from successful Premier League sides are often drawn to the prestige of Real Madrid.

Konate, for instance, lifted the Premier League title just a year before his transfer, finishing fourth with Liverpool in the 2025/26 season. Similarly, Rudiger won the Champions League prior to his move, only to face his future club in the quarter-finals the following year.

If Calafiori decides to leave, few clubs can match the global allure and history of Los Blancos. For now, Arsenal face the first of what promises to be several challenging transfer dilemmas this summer as they aim to sustain the momentum from their record-breaking campaign.
