Why Declan Rice remains ‘unsure’ about one aspect of Kobbie Mainoo’s game as the Manchester United starlet eyes a World Cup midfield role alongside the Arsenal champion

Declan Rice is reportedly doubtful about Kobbie Mainoo’s effectiveness when not in possession, even as the Manchester United midfielder pushes to earn a starting place next to the Arsenal ace in England’s World Cup squad. At the same time, United manager Michael Carrick is preparing a major midfield reshuffle aimed at unlocking Mainoo’s full attacking potential in the upcoming season.

Concerns over off-the-ball contribution

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick is planning a significant overhaul of his midfield setup before his first full season at the helm, but Mainoo still has certain aspects of his game to refine before he can fully convince his England teammates.

As reported by The Sun, Rice is said to be “sceptical” of Mainoo’s productivity off the ball. Although the 21-year-old has adapted to deeper defensive duties under Carrick and become an important attacking presence, his occasional defensive lapses have not gone unnoticed. Despite these shortcomings, Carrick viewed Mainoo’s determined, defence-oriented showing in the narrow 1-0 win over Chelsea in April as his standout performance of the season, even though United managed just one shot on target in that match.

Drawing inspiration from Paris Saint-Germain

To enhance both Mainoo’s individual development and the team’s overall dominance, Carrick is reportedly looking to European football for tactical guidance. Manchester United have identified Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League-winning midfield trio of Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz, and Joao Neves as the ideal template. While PSG line up in a 4-3-3 system, Carrick plans to maintain his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, with captain Bruno Fernandes continuing in his central attacking role just behind the striker. This tactical adjustment is designed to encourage Mainoo to exploit spaces behind rival defences more often. Having scored only once last season, the young midfielder has been challenged to evolve into a more complete and energetic presence in the centre of the park.

Investing in Ederson

To support this tactical progression, the Red Devils have reportedly finalised a £38 million ($51m) transfer for Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta. The defensive midfielder will provide crucial stability at the base of midfield, allowing Mainoo to advance higher up the pitch without leaving the defence vulnerable. In addition, United have secured Mainoo’s services for the long term by offering him a new five-year contract. The restructuring of the midfield is expected to continue, with the club open to pursuing another signing, possibly a third if Manuel Ugarte exits. Veteran Casemiro is also set to depart once his contract expires later this month.

The road ahead for Mainoo and Manchester United

With Ederson stepping in to anchor the midfield, Mainoo will be expected to significantly enhance both his attacking contributions and his work rate off the ball. Addressing Rice’s reservations quickly will be vital if he hopes to solidify his place in England’s starting lineup at the upcoming World Cup. For now, Manchester United’s focus will shift towards sharpening their pre-season preparations before embarking on their domestic and European campaigns.
