How to strengthen electrical safety in residential buildings… BIS gave information on ‘standard churning’

To further strengthen the electrical safety in residential buildings, Manak Manthan was organized by BIS Ghaziabad. This standard brainstorming event on the topic Indian Standard IS 4648:2025 Guide for Electrical Layout in Residential Buildings was organized at NITS, Noida on behalf of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Ghaziabad Branch Office under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India.

Around 90 participants including industry representatives, electrical engineers, builders, consultants and other stakeholders participated in the event. The objective of the program was to promote safe electrical system in residential buildings and increase awareness about the latest Indian standards.

Discussion on prevention of electrical accidents

Chief guest of the program Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairman, Central Electricity Authority (CEA), joined virtually due to official engagements. In his address, he stressed the need for effective compliance of Indian standards for prevention of electrical accidents and said that standards play an important role in building a safe and reliable power system.

The special guest of the program was A.K. Malik, Chief Fire Officer, Delhi Fire Service, while sharing his experience, said that incidents of fire due to electrical faults are increasing. He termed safe electricity installation, public awareness and adherence to standards as the need of the hour.

Promote quality, safety and standardization

The program started with BIS standard song. After this G. Bhavani, Senior Director and Head, BIS Ghaziabad in the welcome address said that in view of the increasing electrical accidents, compliance with Indian standards for safe electrical installations is extremely important. He reiterated BIS's commitment to promote quality, safety and standardization.

In the technical session, Hemant M. Sali, Chartered Engineer and Technical Advisor, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, shared his views on electrical safety, accident prevention and practical application of IS 4648:2025 through virtual medium.

Detailed technical presentation on key provisions

After this, Pawan Kumar Ora, Scientist-C and Deputy Director, BIS and Sandeep Khokhar, Scientist and Assistant Director, BIS gave a detailed technical presentation on the key provisions of IS 4648:2025. He elaborated on the planning, design, installation procedures, safety requirements of electrical layout in residential buildings and common deficiencies observed in the field and explained the practical aspects of compliance to the standards.

In the Manak Manthan dialogue session organized under the programme, the participants asked their questions to the experts, shared practical experiences and had meaningful discussions on various topics related to electrical safety. This dialogue was the main attraction of the programme.

The program ended with a vote of thanks. On this occasion, BIS reiterated its commitment to continuously collaborate with stakeholders and organize awareness programs to promote quality, safety and standardization.
