India has reacted strongly to the alleged demolition of the 125-year-old historical Gurudwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha Sahib located in Farooqabad, Punjab province of Pakistan. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Wednesday that this is a highly condemnable and planned incident of vandalism against a holy Sikh religious site. The Foreign Ministry said that the news of damage to the Gurudwara is very sad. Besides, the report of no effective action being taken by the local administration and the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) is also a matter of serious concern.
India said that this is not an isolated incident. Even before this, many incidents of targeting of religious minorities and their places of worship have come to light in Pakistan. It is clear from this that planned attacks against religious minorities are continuing in Pakistan. India has demanded from the Pakistan government that this matter should be investigated immediately and impartially and the culprits should be brought under the ambit of law. The Ministry of External Affairs also said that the demolished parts of the Gurudwara should be rebuilt as soon as possible.
India reminded Pakistan of its international and constitutional responsibilities and said that it should ensure the safety of religious minorities living there, protect their rights and their religious places and take concrete steps to end the environment of communal violence and religious intolerance.
