Devshayani Ekadashi 2026 Date: With the arrival of Sawan and Chaturmas, the biggest festival of spiritual practice in Hindu religion has started. Today, on 25th July 2026, on the auspicious occasion of Devshayani Ekadashi, Lord Shri Hari Vishnu is entering Yoganidra for four months. Along with this, all the auspicious and auspicious activities like marriage, tonsure, housewarming and engagement will be stopped for four months. According to tradition, now Lord Shiva will take over the management of the universe for the next 4 months i.e. till Devuthani Ekadashi.
According to the Hindu calendar, the Ekadashi date of Shukla Paksha of Ashadha month is called Devshayani Ekadashi. Chaturmas is considered to be the beginning from this day. Chaturmas means a period of four months. According to religious belief, during these four months Lord Vishnu remains in Yoga Nidra on the bed of Sheshnag in Kshir Sagar. It is said that on the day of Devshayani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu sleeps at night after sunset. Special importance has been given to worshiping Lord Vishnu and fasting on this day.
According to religious beliefs, Lord Vishnu is considered the sustainer of the universe. When they go into Yoga Nidra for four months, this period is not considered favorable for auspicious works. This is the reason why marriage, housewarming, tonsure, Upanayana Sanskar and many other auspicious works are not performed during Chaturmas. But during this period, worship, fasting, religious rituals, mantra chanting, meditation and charity are considered to have special importance. This time is considered the best time for devotion to God and spiritual practice.
According to mythological beliefs, when Lord Vishnu goes into Yoga Nidra, then Lord Shiva takes over the responsibility of the operation and welfare of the universe. For this reason, worship of Lord Shiva during Chaturmas is also considered to have special significance. Some time after the beginning of Chaturmas comes the holy month of Saavan. There is a tradition of worshiping Lord Shiva and performing Jalabhishek in Sawan. During this time, a large number of devotees reach Shiva temples and perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva. It is believed that by worshiping Bholenath in Sawan, the wishes of the devotees are fulfilled.
Devotees worship Lord Vishnu on the day of Devshayani Ekadashi. Many devotees also observe waterless or fruit fast on this day. Meditation and mantras of Lord Vishnu are chanted throughout the day. At night, the idol of Lord Vishnu is decorated with rituals and made to sleep on the bed of Sheshnag. During this time, mantras of Lord Vishnu are chanted and wishes are made for the happiness and prosperity of the family.
Lord Vishnu wakes up on the Ekadashi date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month after remaining in Yoga Nidra for four months. This Ekadashi is called Devuthani Ekadashi or Prabodhini Ekadashi. With the awakening of Lord Vishnu, Chaturmas ends and other auspicious activities including marriage begin again.
