This year the month of Sawan is going to start from 30th July 2026, Thursday and it will end on 28th August 2026, Friday. It is believed that by worshiping Mahadev with a true heart in Sawan, one gets his blessings and paves the way for getting rid of life's problems. Worship Mahadev like this on the first day of Sawan

On the first day of Sawan, after taking bath in the morning, meditate on Lord Shiva and take a resolution of worship in your mind. After this, first offer clean water to Shivling. After this, Abhishek can be done with milk, curd, honey and Ganga water. Chanting the mantras of Lord Shiva while performing Abhishek is considered auspicious. After this, offer Belpatra, Dhatura and Aak flowers on Shivalinga. White flowers can also be offered to Lord Shiva. While offering Belpatra during puja, keep in mind that the leaves are clean and whole. After this, offer sandalwood, Akshat and flowers to Bholenath. At last, perform Aarti of Lord Shiva by lighting incense sticks and lamps and place your wishes in front of Mahadev.

Before worshiping on the first day of Sawan, keep all the necessary items at one place, so that there is no shortage of anything at the time of worship. For this, clean water, Ganga water, milk, curd, honey and Panchamrit can be kept to offer on Shivling. Apart from this, Belpatra, Dhatura, Aak flowers, white flowers, sandalwood, Akshat, Roli, Mauli, incense, lamp, camphor and Prasad will be required.

Keep these things in mind while offering Belpatra

Belpatra has special significance in the worship of Lord Shiva. According to belief, Belpatra is very dear to Bholenath. While offering Belpatra on Shivalinga, try to ensure that the leaves are clean and whole. Belpatra is offered upside down i.e. keeping the smooth surface towards Shivalinga. The Belpatra used in puja should first be washed with clean water.

Avoid offering these things to Shivalinga

It is important to keep some things in mind while performing Abhishek on Shivling in Sawan. Water, milk, curd, honey and Ganga water are offered to Lord Shiva, but different traditions are also prevalent regarding the material of worship. Therefore, it is considered better to perform puja according to the tradition of your home and local beliefs. But it is generally advised to avoid offering Ketaki flowers and turmeric on Shivalinga.

Importance of Shiva worship in Saavan

According to religious beliefs, the month of Saavan is dedicated to Lord Shiva. During this period, special importance has been given to offering water and worshiping Shivalinga. There is also a tradition of observing fast on Monday in Sawan. However, it is not necessary to just keep the fast. Devotees can worship Lord Shiva as per their devotion and capacity.
