Sawan 2026: The month of Sawan is considered very special in Hindu religion. Every day of this holy month is special for Shiva devotees. This year Sawan will start from 30th July (Thursday). Special worship of Mahadev starts from the first day of Sawan. This year the month of Sawan has started from 11th July. From the very first day, there is a rush of devotees in the temples and the whole atmosphere becomes devotional. According to religious beliefs, the first day of Sawan is very auspicious because from this day a series of fasts and rituals begin to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.
Devotees go to Shiva temple after taking bath early in the morning and offer water, milk and Belpatra on Shivalinga. By worshiping as per rituals on this day, all the troubles of life go away and the devotees attain happiness and peace.
To understand the religious significance of the first day of Sawan, it is important to know the scriptures. It is believed that the month of Sawan is very dear to Lord Shiva. According to the Puranas, when Halahal poison came out during the churning of the ocean, Mahadev took it in his throat to protect the world. To calm the effects of this poison, all the gods and goddesses performed Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva. This incident happened in the month of Sawan, hence there is a special tradition of worshiping Shiva in this entire month.
The first day starts with this sacred feeling. When devotees take a resolution on the very first day and engage in Shiva sadhana, their mind becomes calm and positive energy is transmitted. This day is considered a symbol of new beginning.
Offering water and worshiping Shivalinga is not just a tradition, but the feeling associated with it is different. In the month of Sawan, when the weather changes and there is greenery all around, our mind also gets filled with new energy. In such a situation, offering water and Belpatra to Lord Shiva provides a strange coolness and peace.
When we worship regularly from the first day of Sawan, our day starts with discipline and good thoughts. When Rudrabhishek and Mahamrityunjaya mantras resonate in the house, the entire atmosphere is filled with positivity. When everyone sings bhajans and kirtans together in temples, the heart feels very peaceful. By worshiping Lord Shiva, all the complications and obstacles in life automatically start going away.
