Uttarakhand’s four villages honoured with national tourism award

Four villages in Uttarakhand—Jakhol, Harsil, Gunji, and Supi—received the 'Best Tourism Village' award from the union tourism ministry on World Tourism Day. The awards recognize their efforts in preserving cultural and natural assets while promoting tourism. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami highlighted the government's commitment to boosting tourism and creating job opportunities.

New Delhi: The hill state Uttarakhand’s four villages- Jakhol (Uttarkashi), Harsil (Uttarkashi), Gunji (Pithoragarh) and Supi (Bageshwar)- were honoured with the “Best Tourism Village” award at a function organized by union tourism ministry at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on World Tourism Day on Friday.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar attended the function as the chief guest. Pradhans of the four villages received the “Best Tourism Village” awards. The “Best Tourism Village” competition is organized at national level every year by the union tourism ministry to honour a village which best exemplifies a tourism destination. The village should also preserve cultural and natural assets.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the selection of the state’s four villages for the prestigious award of “Best Tourism Village” is a matter of pride for the people of this hill state. He further added the government is fully committed to promote tourism in the state.

Referring to the state’s homestay scheme, Dhami said this proves to be very helpful in the promotion of tourism across the state. He also said his government is also encouraging adventure tourism, besides developing tourist destinations. According to him, promotion to tourism will be helpful in the creation of job opportunities also.

The selection of Jakhol village of Uttarkashi district for the award is also recognition of its thriving tourism industry. This village attracts tourists for trekking and mountaineering in the higher hills. This village has won the award under the category of “Adventure tourism”

Harsil village is known for offering natural beauty as well as a peaceful atmosphere. This village has been selected for the award under the category of the ‘Vibrant Village’. The village has its lively local traditions.

Gunji village of Pithoragarh district, selected under the category of the ‘Vibrant Village’, has potential to draw many pilgrims in view of its location on the path to the Kailash Mansarovar.

Supi village, which is selected under the “Agri Tourism” category for the “Best Tourism Village” award, is in Kapkot Tehsil of Bagheswar district. In Uttarakhand, this village is known for its traditional agricultural practices, besides its rich cultural heritage. By bagging this award, this village has got its recognition for promotion of agriculture tourism at the national level. With its focus on agriculture tourism, the village shows its potential for eco-friendly tourism initiatives.

The awards, bagged by these four villages under different categories at a national-level competition organized by the union tourism ministry, has once again reflected varied tourism opportunities available in the hill state.
