Several people were killed and injured in the incident, which happened when a vehicle purposefully crashed into a throng at the market. Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff of Saxony-Anhalt stated that the two casualties were an adult and a child, according to local public radio MDR.

68 individuals were hurt in the sad tragedy that happened in the center of the well-known festive market. 15 of them were seriously wounded, 37 were severely hurt, and 16 were minorly injured.

In order to help the injured and transfer them to surrounding hospitals, emergency reaction teams—which included around 100 firemen and 50 rescue personnel—were promptly sent to the area. To control the situation and stop any damage, local officials have been acting quickly.

According to CNN, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser voiced her astonishment and sadness over the tragic incident after the alleged assault.

“This Magdeburg news is really startling. In order to treat the wounded and save lives, the emergency services are exerting every effort. Faeser said on X, previously known as Twitter, “The victims and their families are in our thoughts and prayers.”

She also gave the public the assurance that security officials were looking into the situation to find out more information about the assault.

The suspected driver of the vehicle engaged in the incident has been taken into custody, German Prime Minister Haseloff said. According to Haseloff, initial evidence points to the driver acting alone, and investigators were gathering further information and questioning the motorist.

“At this time, we are gathering all further information and conducting the questioning. In a televised address on Friday night, Haseloff said, “We were able to arrest him, so there is no longer any danger to the city because it is an individual perpetrator, according to the current information.”

Authorities have emphasized that there is no sign of any other threats, and security officers have been working nonstop to look into the purpose behind the incident. The terrible death toll and the mayhem that broke out amid the joyous setting of the Christmas market have left the local population in shock, CNN said.

Local authorities and residents are mourning the deaths and helping the wounded during this trying period as police continue their investigation.
