I am a gynaecologist and work in a super speciality hospital in Bangalore. When I chose this field, I thought I would have the privilege of improving the lives of newly married couples and women. But as I started working, my thinking changed. Most of the patients who came to me were girls studying in 12th and unmarried women of 25 years of age.

One day, a girl came and complained that she had pain during intercourse. When I asked her if her husband had come, she replied that she was not married. Hearing this, I did not ask many questions and prescribed medicines.

A few days later, another girl came, who said she was 27 years old. She had a stomachache, and tests revealed that she had inflammation in her uterus. When asked in detail, she said she had been taking pills like the I-pill for a long time.

She admitted that she took about two i-pills every week. I was shocked to hear this. When I asked her to call her boyfriend, she was scared but called him when I pressed. The boy was just in class 12, and the girl herself was just 17 years old, while she told her age was 27.

Investigation revealed that the girl had developed several health problems due to the side effects of these pills. Her uterus had to be removed, and she would never be able to become a mother again.

This incident shocked me. I asked her how she decided to take the i-pill, and she said she was inspired by TV advertisements and the words of her friends. She took this medicine out of fear even after using condoms.

I don't know who to blame - the advertisements that promote such drugs, the web series and porn movies, our education system that doesn't talk openly about sex education, the hotel owners who allow entry to minors, or the modern mother who is busy with her phone.

That 12th-class girl had to lose her uterus even after treatment. Now she can never become a mother.

Being a doctor, I appeal to all of you to spread this story to as many people as possible. We should talk openly about these topics with the girls in our family. Awareness is the solution to this problem.
